Tanay Rizal Day Tour: Falls, River and Church Guide

Water spilling down the rock face of Batlag Falls in Tanay, Rizal

A Tanay Rizal day tour is one of the easiest ways to get out of the city for a day without a long drive. Tanay sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre, with waterfalls, a river you can wade through, a mountain trail and a Spanish-era church in town. This guide helps you decide what to visit, how to order the stops and what to arrange before you go.

Fees, hours and rules at each place are set locally and change. Confirm them with the tourism office or the barangay before you travel.

Tanay is about 54 km from Manila and about 37 km from Antipolo, and its land runs from the shore of Laguna de Bay up into the Sierra Madre. That range of heights is why one town offers a pool for swimming, a river and a mountain trail. The municipality's nickname is the tourism capital of Rizal. It is also close to Teresa, where our office is, so we know the roads well.

What to See in Tanay

Daranak Falls and Batlag Falls

Daranak Falls is a plunge waterfall of around 14 meters in Barangay Sampaloc, with a broad pool for swimming. Batlag Falls is a short walk uphill and is usually quieter. Read our full Daranak Falls and Batlag Falls guide for hours, rules and what to pack.

Tinipak River and Mt. Daraitan

Barangay Daraitan is the jump-off for Mt. Daraitan and the Tinipak River, known for its rock formations. Hikers and river-trekkers are asked to register at the barangay hall and go with a local guide, usually charged per group. This is a bigger outing than the falls, so plan a full day for Daraitan on its own and bring suitable shoes. Do not squeeze it into the same day as Daranak.

San Ildefonso de Toledo Parish Church

The town's parish church is dedicated to St. Ildephonsus of Toledo and is one of Rizal's old Spanish-era churches. The town fiesta is held from January 22 to 24. The church is also a stop on our Visita Iglesia route in Rizal, so it works well for a pilgrimage group.

Sampaloc

Sampaloc is the upland barangay where the falls are found. It was designated a summer resort area by law in 1959, which shows how long people have been escaping to these hills. Cooler air and greenery make it a pleasant stop even if you do not swim.

Sample Tanay Day Tour by Van

1. Early departure. Leave early to reach the falls ahead of the crowd.
2. Daranak Falls. Swim in the morning while the pool is calm.
3. Batlag Falls. Walk up for a quieter view.
4. Lunch. Eat your packed meal at a hut, or in Tanay town if you prefer a restaurant.
5. Tanay town. Visit the parish church, then take a coffee break.
6. Head home before evening traffic builds up.

For a group that wants a different pace, such as older relatives or young children, we can shorten the walking and add rest stops. Ask us about a private van with a driver.

Best Time to Go

The dry season, from about November to May, is the most reliable for roads, trails and river trips. The rainy season is greener but trails are slippery, and water activities may be limited after heavy rain. Weekdays are calmer than weekends, and Holy Week and long weekends are crowded.

What to Pack

  • Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes
  • Shoes with a grip, and sandals for the river
  • A dry bag for phones and valuables
  • Insect repellent, sun protection and a hat
  • A packed lunch, water and a bag for your trash
  • Cash for fees, guides, huts and floaters
