Visita Iglesia in Rizal: 7 Churches Route for Holy Week 2027

Visita Iglesia in Rizal is one of the most rewarding ways to spend Holy Week close to Manila. The province has some of the oldest Spanish-era churches in the country, and most of them sit in town centers along one main road. This guide gives you a seven-church route from Cainta to Pililla, with the history of each stop, how to time the day and what to bring.
What Is Visita Iglesia?
Visita Iglesia ("church visit") is a Holy Week devotion in which Catholics visit several churches to pray, traditionally seven, or fourteen to match the Stations of the Cross. Most people do it on Holy Thursday, and many churches stay open until midnight that night. In 2027, Easter Sunday falls on March 28, so Holy Thursday is March 25.
You don't have to do it all in one day. If you'd rather not rush, split the seven churches over two days of Holy Week and give each one time to pray.
The 7-Church Route in Rizal
The route below follows Ortigas Avenue and then Manila East Road, so you move in one direction without doubling back. All seven churches are in town centers, which makes them easy to find. Antipolo has its own pilgrimage, so we cover it in a separate guide and keep this route to the eastern towns.
1. Our Lady of Light Parish, Cainta
The closest stop to Manila, so it's a natural starting point. The Jesuits began the first stone church here in the early 1700s. It was burned down in 1899 during the Philippine-American War, and the present building went up in the 1960s. The church is a recognized historical site.
2. St. John the Baptist Parish Church, Taytay
One of Rizal's oldest parishes, founded in the late 1500s. In 2024, Pope Francis elevated the church to a minor basilica, the first in the Diocese of Antipolo.
3. Sta. Ursula Parish Church, Binangonan
Look up inside: this church has no ceiling, so you can see the wooden roof trusses, which gives it a rustic, quiet feel. The parish dates from 1621, the present church was built between 1792 and 1800, and it was declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2025.
4. St. Jerome Parish Church, Morong
Many travelers find this the most striking church on the route. The stone church dates from the early 1600s, its façade and octagonal bell tower were added in the 1850s, and it was declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2025.
5. St. Joseph Church, Baras
Built of adobe stone in the 1680s, with a Baroque façade that has a fortress-like look. It has been a diocesan shrine since 2021 and a National Cultural Treasure since 2025, and it's a good stop for a quiet moment of prayer.
6. San Ildefonso de Toledo Parish Church, Tanay
A National Cultural Treasure since 2001, known for its carved Stations of the Cross, often described as among the most beautiful in Asia. This is a good one to visit slowly if you're praying the Stations.
7. St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church, Pililla
The farthest stop, and a fitting end. Franciscans founded the church in 1583, and it is known for the religious paintings on its ceiling. It is now a diocesan shrine.
Planning Your Day
- Start early. Pililla is about three hours from Manila by road, and Holy Week traffic can add a lot. Leave early if you want to do all seven in one day.
- Check church hours first. Opening hours and Mass times change during Holy Week, so call each parish office a few days before, and watch for the Diocese of Antipolo's announcements on the Holy Week 2027 schedule.
- Dress modestly. Wear a shirt with sleeves and shorts or pants below the knee. Some churches turn away bare shoulders.
- Bring water, a hat and small bills. Candle offerings and parking are usually small cash payments.
- Be quiet and respectful. These are working churches, and many people are praying. Ask before taking photos during Mass.
- Take a driver. Looking for parking in several town centers on Holy Thursday is tiring. A hired van lets everyone pray instead of drive.
Beyond the Seven Churches
If you'd like to add some history, the Angono Petroglyphs, rock carvings believed to be the oldest artworks in the Philippines, are a short detour near Binangonan. Check the National Museum for current visiting hours and fees before you go. If you're going with a parish, school or office group, we can also turn this route into a full-day pilgrimage with food stops.
