Travel Insurance for Filipinos: Do You Really Need It?

An airplane wing tip seen from the window above the clouds

Do you really need travel insurance? For some trips it is required, and for others it is a smart choice. This guide on travel insurance for Filipinos explains what it covers, when you must have it, how to compare policies and what to check in the fine print. It is general information, not insurance advice, so always read the policy itself.

What Is Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is a policy that pays for specific costs if something goes wrong on a trip. Policies differ, but they commonly cover:

  • Emergency medical costs and hospital stays abroad.
  • Emergency evacuation or repatriation, which brings you home if you are seriously ill or injured.
  • Trip cancellation or interruption, if you cannot travel for a covered reason.
  • Delayed or lost baggage, and sometimes lost documents.
  • Flight delays, in some plans.
  • Personal accident benefits.

What is actually covered, and how much, depends on the plan. Exclusions matter as much as the benefits.

When Is Travel Insurance Required?

Schengen visa. If you apply for a visa to travel to the Schengen area in Europe, travel medical insurance is part of the requirements. Commonly cited requirements are coverage of at least 30,000 euros for medical expenses, validity in all Schengen countries, coverage for the whole stay and repatriation. Embassies and visa centers set the final rules, so check the current requirements for your application before you buy. Our visa fees and processing times page can help you plan the timeline.

Other countries. Some destinations or visas may ask for proof of insurance. Check the requirements for your destination.

Domestic trips. Insurance is usually optional for travel within the Philippines, but it can still be useful, especially for island trips, expensive bookings or trips with a lot of activities.

Do You Really Need It? A Quick Guide

Travel insurance is strongly worth considering if:

  • You are traveling abroad, where hospital bills can be very high.
  • You have prepaid, non-refundable bookings.
  • You are traveling with children, seniors or anyone with medical conditions.
  • You will do adventure activities such as diving or trekking.
  • You are traveling during typhoon season, when delays and cancellations are common.

You may skip it for a short, low-cost domestic trip with flexible bookings, if you accept the risk. Decide with your own situation in mind.

How to Choose a Policy

1. Match the coverage to your trip. Check the destination, the dates and the activities.
2. Check the medical limit. Overseas medical costs can be high, so look at the maximum benefit.
3. Read the exclusions. Common exclusions include pre-existing conditions, some adventure sports and events you could have foreseen when you bought the policy.
4. Check the claim process. Is there a 24-hour assistance line? What documents do you need?
5. Compare total cost and value, not just the lowest price.
6. Buy early. Some benefits, like trip cancellation, only apply if you buy soon after booking.

What to Read in the Fine Print

  • The deductible or excess, the amount you pay first.
  • Pre-existing conditions and how they are treated.
  • Limits per item for baggage, electronics and cash.
  • What counts as a covered reason for cancellation.
  • Whether COVID-type or pandemic events are covered, if that matters to you.
  • How to contact the insurer abroad, and how to file a claim.
